A lot of people refer to trikes as either three wheeled motorcycles, 3 wheelers, three wheelers, three wheeled motorcycle choppers, etc. Sometimes these terms are preferred because of the confusion of "trike" as "tricycle" or other vehicles including ultra-lights.
Three wheeled motorcycles -- or trikes -- have been around for decades and continue to grow in popularity.
Three wheeled motorcycles have several advantages. They are much safer. Three wheelers are in a natural state of balance. You aren't constantly fighting the desire of gravity to bring you down. You don't have to put your feet down when you stop -- something everyone does some time or another whether they want to admit it or not.
Gravel, puddles, oil and diesel spills are hazards for bikes that do not threaten you on a three wheel motorcycle. All trikes are harder to roll than bikes but VW three wheelers are virtually impossible to roll with their independent suspensions.

Also three wheeled motorcycle choppers can carry passengers much more easily, safely, and comfortably. Some trikes can even carry two passengers well. You passenger on your thre wheeler doesn't burn her leg on your stupid bike exhaust and doesn't have to worry about going down or helping you balance.
